How to make a flowchart in Google Docs
Google Docs has no flowchart tool of its own, but its built-in Drawing editor has the shapes. For anything beyond a few boxes, building the chart in a flowchart maker and uploading the image is faster and looks tidier.
Fastest: build it here, upload the image
- Type your steps in the flowchart maker.
- Click Download PNG (Google Docs does not accept SVG uploads). Or click Copy image and paste straight into the doc.
- In Google Docs: Insert → Image → Upload from computer.
- Click the image → Image options → Size & rotation to fit it to the page width.
Tip: Need to change it later? Edit it here (your chart is saved in this browser), download again, then right-click the image in Docs → Replace image.
Draw it with Google Drawings inside Docs
Fine for a short process.
- Insert → Drawing → + New opens a drawing canvas.
- Click the Shape icon → Shapes; the flowchart shapes are in the last rows (hover for names like “Flowchart: Decision”).
- Double-click a shape to type its label.
- Use the Line → Elbow connector; connector ends stick to the small connection points that appear on a shape.
- Click Save and close. Double-click the drawing in the doc any time to edit it.
Google Slides has the same shapes under Insert → Shape → Shapes, and accepts the same PNG via Insert → Image.

Questions people ask
Is there a Google flowchart maker?
Not a dedicated one. Google Drawings (Insert → Drawing in Docs, or drawings.google.com) has flowchart shapes and connectors, but you place everything by hand. Third-party add-ons exist in the Workspace Marketplace.
Does Google Docs have a flowchart template?
No built-in one. Start from one of our free flowchart templates, edit the text, and upload the PNG.
Why does my SVG not upload to Google Docs?
Google Docs only accepts raster images such as PNG, JPG and GIF. Download the PNG instead; FlowBuilder exports it at twice screen resolution so it stays sharp when printed.
